Are the UN's 17 SDGs just for businesses?

No, absolutely not. It is for all of us.

What are the UN's global goals?
The UN's SDGs are a global agenda for sustainable development and address some of the world's most pressing challenges, such as poverty, inequality, climate change, biodiversity and environmental degradation.

What is sustainable development?
Sustainable development is the development of our society and the world that meets the needs of the present without affecting the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It is about finding a balance between social, economic and environmental considerations to ensure that our resources and environment are preserved and protected in the long term. So we leave a world for our children to live in.

What can I do as a person?
Our actions and choices play a decisive role. A much bigger role than we often think. When we make sustainable choices, we can directly influence several of the goals, including goals for responsible consumption and production, climate action, combating hunger and poverty, and promoting health and well-being.

When we choose to buy from companies that have a strong focus on social and environmental sustainability, we send a clear signal to the market that there is a demand for more responsible and sustainable products. This can motivate companies to change their business practices and produce more sustainably. That is that companies take responsibility for world development.

As individuals, we therefore have a responsibility to create demand for sustainable products and services and promote a more sustainable lifestyle. It is us who indirectly decide what and how companies must produce.

Molly's Heart and sustainability
We work to improve and influence 8 out of 17 global goals. Below you can read how we consciously work to influence the world positively every day.

All our products are Fair Trade and socially responsible. This means that we work directly with world goals 1 (eliminate poverty) and 2 (eradicate hunger) and 8 (decent working conditions). We believe that everyone has the right to a dignified life. Getting out of the cycle of poverty by selling products at a fair price allows for a dignified life.

We also work with Global Goal 10 (less inequality). We believe that a better balance must be created between the "rich north and the poor south". In addition, we work with world goal 5 (gender equality) as most of our products are produced by women and small female entrepreneurs.

Global Goals 12 (responsible consumption) and 13 (focus on climate) are achieved through our focus on recycling materials (e.g. our brass figures, cushions, carpets, jewellery, etc.).

We work with SDG 17 (partnership for action) by collaborating with Fair Trade organizations and NGOs. And we collaborate with a large number of Danish companies who all want to contribute to the development through e.g. socially responsible company Christmas gifts, customer gifts, etc

Is it useful?
Yes, it does, but unfortunately there is still a long way to go before we have realized the goals (in 2030). That is why we are all needed. We need to make conscious choices more and more often. That we talk to each other about what we each do. And that we talk about what is difficult. I am always happy to talk to anyone who is interested, so let me know if you have any questions, comments or just want to know more.

With love, Birgitte
