What are Bolga baskets, and what makes them special?

Bolga baskets are hand-woven baskets from Ghana, made from elephant grass. The strong and pliable natural material is water-resistant, so the basket can be moistened and reshaped if it becomes crooked. Each basket is created by hand and therefore has its own unique expression in shape, color, and weave.

I know what some people are thinking: A basket is just a basket, right? No, not quite. When you look at the material, the hands behind it, and how the basket can live with you in everyday life, the difference becomes clear.

Where do Bolga baskets come from?

Bolga baskets are named after Bolgatanga in Ghana. Here, basket weaving is a traditional craft and an important source of income for families and local communities. The baskets are hand-woven, and therefore, colors, shape, and weave may vary slightly from basket to basket. This is not a flaw. It is the fingerprint of the craft itself.

Our selection includes both round baskets with handles and other shapes for storage. When you choose from our Bolga baskets, you are not choosing a uniform factory product. You are choosing a basket where the material and the work of the individual weaver are still visible. For me, that is precisely what makes handmade interior items come alive.

What distinguishes Bolga baskets from other woven baskets?

The material makes a big difference. Our Bolga baskets are woven from elephant grass. It is a strong and pliable natural material that can withstand water and moisture. If the basket has been compressed during transport or has become crooked during use, you can moisten it and reshape it with your hands. When the grass dries, the basket will regain its shape.

This also means that the basket is made to be used. You don't have to treat it like a decorative item that must never be touched. It can be part of everyday life along with our other fair trade baskets, and it can be given new life with a little water and care when its shape needs a hand.

What can you use a Bolga basket for?

The short answer is: Everything you want to gather without completely hiding it away. Product pages mention, among other things, knitting, newspapers, toys, blankets, toilet paper, empty bottles, and groceries. A Bolga basket can therefore move from the living room to the hallway, children's room, or bathroom, depending on what you need.

Consider the task the basket needs to solve before you choose. Should it stand on the floor with blankets, or should it be easy to take with you as a shopping basket? Should the color blend calmly into the room, or can the basket attract attention? In our selection of woven baskets, you can compare shapes and expressions and find the solution that suits your home.

How do you care for a Bolga basket?

It's fortunately simple. Wipe the basket with a damp cloth or gently rinse it in lukewarm water when needed. If the shape needs to be corrected, dampen the elephant grass, shape the basket with your hands, and let it dry in the desired shape.

At Molly's Heart, we work with fair trade because trade should create opportunities and dignity. A hand-woven basket is only a small part of the bigger picture. But it reminds us that everyday things can carry both function, craftsmanship, and people's work with them.

Thank you for reading and for choosing craftsmanship with a story.

Kind regards,
Birgitte
