Why are hand-woven baskets never exactly the same?

Why are hand-woven baskets never exactly alike?

Hand-woven baskets are never exactly alike because they are shaped by hand from materials that vary themselves. Small differences in weaving, color, measurements, and shape are therefore to be expected. They do not make the basket any less useful. They show that each item is created individually and not pressed out by a machine.

I understand that it can feel uncertain when the basket in the picture is not an exact blueprint. So what do you get? You get a piece of craftsmanship with its own expression, but of course, you should still be able to choose based on informed grounds.

Why do the shapes of hand-woven baskets vary?

The shape varies because each basket is woven and shaped individually. In our current product descriptions, it states in several places that measurements, shape, and weave may vary slightly. This applies to baskets from Senegal, Bolga baskets from Ghana, and sisal baskets from Kenya. Therefore, you may encounter small differences, even when the model, color, and stated measurements are the same.

This does not mean that the measurements are irrelevant. They still help you assess whether the basket fits on the shelf, on the floor, or in the space by the sofa. But read approximate measurements as an honest range, not as a promise of millimeter precision. See our complete selection of hand-woven baskets and always compare the specific product page.

For me, the small differences are a reminder that a human has worked with the material. Molly's Heart must be clear about the variation so that you know what you are choosing.

Why can color and weave look different?

The color can appear differently from basket to basket, and the weave can be slightly tighter in one place than another. Our current selection includes elephant grass, sisal, rattan, and water hyacinth, among other materials. The material depends on the model, and the product description states what the specific basket is woven from.

Some baskets have calm natural tones. Others have bright colors, patterns, or details in plastic thread and leather. When the work is done by hand, the transition between colors and patterns becomes part of the individual item. It is not necessary that you love every variation. The important thing is that you know it can be there.

If you want a very calm expression, start with color and shape. If you want more character, you can also look at our unique baskets from Ghana. At Molly's Heart, we use the differences to describe the baskets as concretely as possible.

Are small imperfections the same as flaws?

No, not necessarily. A minor difference in shape, color, or weave can be a natural part of handmade work. An actual damage or a clear flaw is something else. Therefore, you should read the description of the specific item and check if Molly's Heart has highlighted any special conditions.

In the current assortment, there are also items explicitly marked as second sorting. Here, the product description states that the variations are greater than those we normally accept. This distinction is important. Ordinary handmade differences should not be hidden, but special deviations should not be wrapped up as charm either.

I would rather tell too much than too little. You should be able to distinguish between the natural traces of craftsmanship and a condition that is significant for your choice. Look at the pictures, read the text, and ask us if you are in doubt. This is a perfectly reasonable part of choosing handmade.

How do you choose the right item?

Start with the function. Should the basket hold laundry, blankets, knitting, or small items? Then look at the opening, lid, handles, and the measurements stated on the product page. Once the practical aspects fit, you can choose color and expression with more peace of mind.

Use the pictures as a clear guide, but do not expect a copy down to every weave. For several current items, we directly state that shape and weave may vary. Some product pages also invite you to contact us about the measurements of the current item. This is especially useful when the basket needs to be placed in a specific spot.

You can also explore our collection on basket weaving. It shows the breadth of shapes and materials. And perhaps that's precisely the point: The right basket doesn't have to be perfectly identical. It should fit your home and your life.

Thank you for choosing with curiosity.

Kind regards
Birgitte
