What is a mala?
A mala is a traditional Buddhist meditation necklace with 108 beads, used for meditation and mantra practice. According to ancient Vedic scriptures, the body contains 72,000 energy pathways – called nadis – of which 108 converge at the heart chakra (hrit padma).
When a mantra is repeated 108 times, the body's central energy pathways are activated. The mala helps count the repetitions and supports immersion, presence and calm. The number 108 symbolizes unity, emptiness and infinity in both Buddhist and Hindu traditions.
