A mala is a traditional Buddhist meditation necklace with 108 beads. According to ancient Vedic scriptures, the body consists of 72,000 energy pathways, called 'nadis', of which 108 meet in the hrit padma chakra below the heart. By repeating a mantra 108 times during meditation, one energetically touches all the most important nadis. The mala is used to count the mantras, and the number 108 symbolizes unity, emptiness and infinity.
